The call of Northern Michigan took her and her husband and family to the Tawas area on the sunrise side of Lake Huron, where she opened another beauty shop.
Southward to Florida USA, Nancy RONALD SCHALM, of the Canadian branch, is writing a children's book to add to the collection of SCHALM authored books.
We leap now across the Atlantic Ocean to the Netherlands. S. W. SCHALM, of the Germany branch, is a doctor specializing in hematology. One of his major areas of research is with hepatitis. He travels world wide to share his findings. He and his Father, also an M. D., have authored numberous things.
In East central Holland in the town of Zwolle, is a school named De SCHALM. They specialize in power learning, reading and spelling with the goal to prevent reading difficulties. Who, why and how it got its name ???? is a good question.
Another, "Who, why and how it got its name?", is "De SCHALM" Cultural Center also in the Netherlands. It hosts musical events from all over the world, but why the name SCHALM, who knows?
The Eastern most SCHALM facade, known at this writing, is in Bad Durben, Germany. Here we find SCHALMweg, which means SCHALM Way or SCHALM St., on a street sign. Again, another, "Who, why and how it got its name? And who knows?"
There are a lot of famous SCHALM things. I bet there are some we left out. Tell us about them so we can put them in a future issue.

GERMAN AMERICAN DAY
Mark your calendars for October 6, EVERY YEAR. Yeah, I was going to get this newsletter out by then, this Fall, but... So, we're early for next year. What is October 6 then? Well, it is German American Day! The Irish have St. Patty's Day, the Scots have a day sometime in the Spring, African Americans have the month of February, and we have October 6. Why that date? The "Palatine Patter" reports that: "Individual German settlers are documented already in Jamestown, Virginia (1608), the 'birthplace' of america. However, it was on October 6, 1683 when a group of Mennonites from Krefeld disembarked from the 'Concord' (the German Mayflower) in Philadelphia, constituting the first group immigration of Germans to America. Over 7 million would follow over the next 300 years making German-Americans the largest ethnic group in the United States. In the 1990 census, 1 out of 4 Americans reported German ancestry."
October 6 is the day each year that we get to celebrate our being German. Start to plan something now for next October 6. You could eat at a German restaurant or cook your own German meal. You could wear something German or fly a German flag. Or, you could put a small flag on your desk at work (just a pencil with a flag shaped piece of paper colored red, black and gold would do) Or, you could drink some German beer. Try to check out your local Octoberfests. Both the one in Kitchener, Ontario Canada and the one in Frankenmuth, MI USA are ranked amoung the top Octoberfests in North America by the "German Life" magazine. You have nearly a year to plan, so come up with something special! Celebrate!!!!! German American Day--October 6!!!!!!

KAFFEE KLATSCH KAFFEE
by Olga SCHALM ROEKLE
Actually, I never watched my mother, Marie Caroline Elisabeth REHN, make coffee for a large group. She was always in charge of the coffee at church. I know she used one of those large coffee pots, probably an enameled one, they had in the church's kitchen. She put in the amount of water needed and the coffee right into the cold water (I have no idea of the proportions) and somewhere along the line broke an egg and put it, shell and all, into the boiling hot coffee. This was supposed to "clear the beverage" and you never saw any evidence of the egg when it was served! Using this method she made delicious coffee for a crowd at church, but she couldn't make the beverage worth "siccum" for a few people. Coffee at home was made in a smaller coffee pot without the egg.
In the first issue of the newsletter we promised to give you the recipe for this wonderful kaffee. Well, we found it from Anna E. Keppy of Davenport, IA in the German Heritage Recipes Cookbook put out by the American/Schleswig-Holstein Heritage Society. Here it is:
EGG COFFEE to make 1 gallon
1 scant Cup of coffee grounds (can be varied according to strength desired)
1 egg and water
Fill pot with water no fuller than 2" from the top. Stir egg in with the coffee grounds in a bowl. When the water comes to a boil, add the coffee ground mixture to the water & stir. Leave the lid open and watch until it comes to a boil again; turn off flame and stir it a bit at the top with a spoon. Close lid & let stand until grounds settle before serving. Coffee made this way is a transparent brown color (rather than black or opaque) & has an unbeatable flavor.
Note: For a 2 gallon pot I use 2 eggs and if the grounds are not completely dampened I add water to make the entire mixture moist.
Caution: This does foam when adding the egg so have a potholder handy to remove the coffee pot from the heat.

In a warm cup pour a swig of rum, add hot strong kaffee and a little sugar. Top with a cap of whipped cream. (You know: The pastor is not to smell the rum!) If you say "Prost", you'll give it away.
CORRECTIONS
Since this newsletter is a very unexact science there are bound to be goofs. But, to leave out my Great Grandmother's name and to spell my own Grandmother's name wrong in the last issue........ Well, I guess since I can't spell my own name right sometimes; I hope they are not rolling over in their graves.
To my GG'ma, Johanna Emilia MARQUARDT and my G'ma, Marie Caroline Elisabeth REHN I am sorry. Ah, the newsletter is reasonable considering your editor can't see, can't type and can't spell. So, we will just add a new section: corrections!

DID YOU MISS THE MT CLEMENS REUNION?
The Mt. Clemens reunion last May 17 was small in number but large in information. Of course there was good food, fun and conversation. There were genealogy charts from every branch. One of the things that we tried to do was read the book in which Johanna Emilia MARQUARDT wrote down all of the births and deaths in the family that she and Michael SCHALM had. The problem was that it was hand written in German Script in faded pencil on very yellowed paper that was falling apart. In the discussions of that day and the ensuing weeks we came up with their marriage date of 2 June 1872 and the name, birth and death date of a baby of theirs who died as an infant. Little, ?Karl? Julius SCHALM, was born 12 June 1883, died 30 June 1884 and is said to be buried somewhere on the East side of Detroit, MI USA.

College Graduation was just one of the big events of 1998 for Kyle SCHALM of the Canadian branch. Good Luck Kyle!
Wedding bells rang in the Spring wedding of Kyle SCHALM of the Canadian branch and his bride, Katherine BIRCHALL. The 28 May 1998 event took place in Northampton, MA USA. The couple will be living in Vancouver, British Columbia Canada for the next two years. Congrats!!!
The Belgian Connection Goverments can be sticky. Rebecca SCHALM of the Canadian branch, is now back in Europe after being 'temporarily' deported. The Belgian officals just didn't understand that she is married to her husband who is working in their country for the next couple of years. Do you think governments plan this red tape or that it just happens?

Heaven is home now for Calvin HANSON of the Mt. Clemens branch. After quite a bout with Alzheimers Calvin died on 9 September 1998 . He was born on 12 October 1923 in Harbor Beach, MI USA. He is buried on the large Michael SCHALM plot at Clinton Grove Cemetary in Mt. Clemens, MI USA. Our thoughts are with the family.
Doctor Doctor Lisa Yael Stein and Brian D. Lanoil, of the Mt. Clemens branch, received their Ph.D's in micro-biology from Oregon State University last summer. They are now doing Post Doctoral work as astro-biologists in connection with Cal Tech and JPL {Jet Propulsion Laboratory) in Pasadena, California. They are funded by NASA to work in collaboration with Dr. Ken Nealson whose project was written up in the September 14th issue of "Newsweek." "Astrobiologists will also study changes in Earth's chemical composition over billions of years. They will then apply this knowledge to other planets to look for "chemical signatures" that might indicate that life has existed or could exist there." Way to go Lisa and Brian!
Christened in October, Alexis Jordan ALSUP was born 25 July 1998 into the Mt. Clemens branch. She and her proud parents, Cindy JORDAN and Jaramie ALSUP, live in Canton, MI USA. Welcome to the world Alexis!
A Year Later those in the 'Year of the Bone' story from the first issue are progressing well. Sure they have aches and pains, but they are definitly finding ways to have fun in life.

Escaped Fires With the dryness of this summer fires raged in many parts of North America. The SCHALM families in Florida, USA were spared. The SCHALM families in Alberta Canada all surrived. Although some of the Canadian families had to be evacuated none lost their homes. Thank you God for looking after our family.

PAUL SCHALM MEETS PAUL SCHALM WHO MEETS PAUL SCHALM OR
EAST MEETS MT C MEETS CANADA
By Ginny, Paul and Paul J III SCHALM
Paul Schalm, Jr. of the East Coast branch just happened to drive by an elementary school in Clawson, MI, in the late 1950's early 1960. He must have done a real double take when he read PAUL A SCHALM on the front of this school. Next thing you know the two were face to face at the house of the Mt Clemens Paul. Paul SCHALM, Jr. owned a trucking company. Paul August SCHALM's name was on the elementary school because he was the superintent in Clawson for 20 some years. Each told their families about their meeting and the rarest of meeting another guy with nearly the same name.
PJS III drove by the school accidentally, too, while waiting to be married(the first time) in Bloomfield Hills. His former wife and he had recently graduated (MBA) from Michigan State after an eastern education PJS III had just left active duty as an Air Force Officer in 1960. PJS says there is a Prussian connection between these two men. Somewhere this is on paper..........we'll have it in print soon......right?
In the late Summer, 1997, in the modern version of this story, Ginny Schalm of the Mt Clemens branch, was checking out an online computer directory for other SCHALMs. She found Paul J SCHALM III of the East Coast branch in FL.
Of course there is his son, Paul J SCHALM IV. You read about his recent marriage in the last issue. It is a small world.
And it is getting even smaller; as onto the computer scene comes another Paul SCHALM from the Canadian branch. He said, "I thought I was the only Paul SCHALM in the world!...until I read THE SCHALM CONNECTION." This Paul SCHALM is a teacher by vocation and a church and community music director by avocation. He and his wife,Dolores KURTZ, live with their 2 children in Kitchener, Ontario Canada. His son's name is Andrew Paul SCHALM.
I suggested that the three earthly Pauls talk on the computer. I believe that there are six total Pauls at the last count......
We'll look forward to tying us all together.

Talent Night: There are many talented people in this large family We hope you will prepare a skit, a poem, songs, or whatever entertainment you can and ready it for our talent night. Each item must be in good taste for a Christian family reunion. If we see that the progam will he too lengthy (more than two hours) we may have to restrict its length., so each presentation should be restricted to five minutes. Alf Schalm and Ozzie Schalm v ill be masters of ceremony if they are still alive. (They're really getting quite old, you know!) Surname Index
